Notice of Special Meeting of Council

Town of Northeastern Manitoulin & the Islands New Official Plan 


 Take notice that on Tuesday September 1, 2026 the Council of the Town of Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands will hold a hybrid public meeting, pursuant to section 26 of the Planning Act, to provide an opportunity to discuss the new Official Plan, process and any revisions that may be required to the Official Plan


The meeting is to be held:

Tuesday September 1, 2026 at 7:00 pm

Town of Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands Council Chambers

OFFICIAL PLAN UPDATE

The Town of Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands is in the process of updating its Official Plan. 

An Official Plan (OP): 

•       Is a policy document that is enabled by the Provincial Planning Act

•       Is adopted locally by Municipal Council and approved by the Province

•       Provides general direction for future development patterns (land use, infrastructure, resource management and protection)

•       Provides a framework for implementing tools (i.e. Zoning By-laws, Community Improvement Plans, etc.)

 

The Town’s current plan came into effect on November 3, 2016. Review the Current OP documents here: Town of NEMI - Official Plan

 

Town of NEMI Official Plan Update Process 

The project will occur in phases and include several opportunities for public input and community involvement: 

  • Stage 1: Project Initiation and Community Engagement: Spring/Summer 2026
    • To include Provincial One-Window Meeting; Pop-up at NEMI Trade Show; Special Meeting of Council
  • Stage 2: Background Review and Policy Direction: Summer 2026
  • Stage 3: Draft Official Plan: Fall 2026
    • To include Public Open House – stay tuned!
  • Stage 4: Plan Adoption: Early 2027
    • To include Public Meeting at Council – stay tuned!

Project updates, public notices, and draft documents will be posted on the Town’s website.
